In Richard Linklater’s upcoming film Nouvelle Vague, actress Zoey Deutch steps into the iconic shoes of French New Wave muse Jean Seberg—both in spirit and in style.

Central to her transformation is a remarkable piece of fashion history: a reproduction of a CHANEL Haute Couture bustier dress from the Spring-Summer 1956 collection, originally designed by Gabrielle Chanel herself.
“It’s one of my favorite dresses ever,” Deutch gushes. “When we were figuring out what I should wear for the photocall in Cannes, we thought this was the perfect moment for it to have another moment in the spotlight. And also the movie is in black & white so no one saw the colour! It’s a reproduction of a CHANEL Haute Couture bustier dress from 1956 imagined by Gabrielle CHANEL and it’s the exact dress I’m wearing in the movie. The shoes are so beautiful, they’re my dream shoes, they were custom dyied to match the dress as well. I love it so much, it’s devastating I have to give it back to CHANEL!“
Painstakingly revived from the archives of the Patrimoine de CHANEL, the dress is more than a costume—it’s a cinematic and sartorial tribute. The silhouette, contemporary to the era of Breathless (1960), pairs two-tone striped taffeta with delicate beige dotted organza. To bring this vision to life, CHANEL’s ateliers embarked on meticulous fabric research, sourcing textiles as close as possible to the originals. The result is a faithful recreation, crafted using Haute Couture techniques passed down from Mademoiselle Chanel’s own legacy.

Zoey Deutch wore the dress not only on screen, but also during the photocall at the Cannes Film Festival, seamlessly bridging the past and present through elegance, history, and timeless design.
